CLINIC
The LUCC Clinic was established to provide affordable healthcare and dedicated to improving the physical,
psychological, emotional, and social well-being of the elderly, poor, and underserved growing Latino population.
Realizing that Carroll County has a large impoverished Latino population and that the poor often lack adequate
healthcare, the LUCC Clinic was created to address these needs. The dignity of each patient is preserved in a
comprehensive program emphasizing total health and prevention, while enhancing each patient's positive self-image.
After gaining city approval from the Carrollton Housing Authority, LUCC's Healthcare Clinic opened for service on
August 23, 2002. Dr. Evangelio Gonzalez, an affable Cuban-born physician, runs the medical clinic in two formerly
vacant units in Evergreen Apartments(formely known as Brookwood). Like other partners in LUCC, Dr. G. still has
many dreams for additional programs, including a recreational center and day care facility.
Tanner Medical Center generously offers support in the form of equipment and furnishings that allows the clinic to
function. Dr. G., a Carroll County Family Physician for 30 years, President of LUCC, and Chair of LUCC's governing
board, has been running the low-cost community clinic  since its beginning, organizing local nurses and others who
offer their services pro bono. In addition, volunteer physicians, nursing and psychology students from the State
University of West Georgia, as well as citizens from the larger community and fellow Latino community members
volunteer regularly at the clinic.

Since the clinic has opened, the clinic has served more than 6000 individuals and has had more than 18,000
appointments.. Currently the clinic sees an average of a hundred patients per week. The clinic offers general
medical care and has diagnosed cases such as brain tumors, testicular carcinoma, cancer of the colon, a ruptured
heart valve requiring open-heart surgery, diabetes, hypertension, work-related injuries, pregnancies, etc.

One of Dr. Gonzalez's major goals is to have the clinic open seven days a week and to have a full-time nurse
practitioner there. "What we do here really helps the area hospitals," he says. "We take a burden off the emergency
rooms. Patients can come here and feel like they belong. People here understand their language and their situation.
We treat people with dignity and respect, regardless of their ability to pay." The clinic also sees other (non-Latino)
low-income area residents, many of whom are uninsured. The Clinic operates entirely on donations and volunteer
work.

For his tireless commitment to serving the Latino community, in 2003 the Georgia Academy of Family Practice
awarded Dr. Gonzalez "The Family Practice Community Service Award", and the Carroll County Sertoma Club
awarded Dr. Gonzales "The Service To Mankind Award".
